Historic Machinery Services can perform boiler work for your locomotive on-site; for those smaller jobs where removal  of the boiler from the frame is not necessitated by the repair.

Shown above is the removal of the lower section of a wrapper side sheet. The staybolt holes on the remaining portion of the sheet are being reclaimed by welding. The holes have been beveled, PT or dye penetrant

checked for cracks before our certified welders begin any repair work.

 

locomotive boiler crown stays

Crown stays with a 1 1/4" upset ends, machined and threaded in-house to insure the thread engagement in the crown and roof sheets meets Historic Machinery Services requirement for well fitting and sealing staybolts.

boiler staybolt tap

Staybolt taps furnished by Historic Machinery Services in diameters from 15/16" thru 1 1/8" offer flexible length configurations to users, shown by the  bottom tap.  A conventional reamer/tap is illustrated by the upper tap.

By using new standard taps with known pitch diameters, we can consistently install hundreds of staybolts with proper thread engagement.

carbon steel boiler rivets

Historic Machinery Services now offers boiler rivets of numerous diameters and head styles.
Our bar stock meets the requirements of ASME SA-31providing for easy upsetting, driving and Code compliance.

Large flush patch ready for installation stands next to the old riveted patched section of the 1st course.
After welding is completed the welds will be radiographicly examined followed by a post weld heat treatment to reduce stresses in the weld and plate.
